Have you ever felt like your self-belief is disappearing by the day — like you’ve lost the map to your own life?
You’re holding everything together — family, patients, leadership, decisions — but deep inside, a voice is whispering:
“Is this really who I am?”
“Why don’t I feel confident anymore?”
There’s a lot I could say about burnout and the emotional weight of medicine. But today, I want to start where you can immediately take action.
Reclaiming your confidence starts by connecting to your values.

What Are Values — and Why Do They Matter?
Values are the things that matter most to you — the principles and feelings that make you feel most alive, honest, and connected to yourself.
They’re not goals or roles (like “doctor” or “mum”).
They’re not morals.
They’re not the values you think you should have because they sound good!
They’re deeply personal: things like freedom, integrity, humour, love, or courage.
Values are like the deep blueprint of who you are.
When you’re living in alignment with your values, confidence feels natural.
When you’re not, everything feels like hard work — even the things that look successful on paper.
Values are useful because they:
Act as an internal compass
Help you make decisions that feel authentic
Help you live and work in a way that feels more aligned.
Guide you to work out your boundaries
And many other things!
Most of my clients say that developing deeper clarity on their values and expressing them has been the most powerful bit of work we have done together.
Try this: the gut-check values sort
This is a quick but powerful exercise I often use in workshops. All you need is some paper (or sticky notes) and a pen.
Step 1: Write It All Down
Jot down ten things that matter to you. Think in terms like honesty, loyalty, connection, — not people or achievements.
Step 2: Ruthlessly Prioritise
Now, you’re going to get rid seven of them!
- First, throw away three. You’ve got 30 seconds.
- Then two more — 20 seconds.
- Then two more — again, 20 seconds.
Don’t overthink. Go with your gut. What feels most alive and true?
Step 3: Reflect
- What do you feel about the three values you kept? Surprised? Affirmed?
- Where do these values show up in your day-to-day life?
- Am you honouring them… or have they been squeezed out by duty and burnout?
- What’s one small action you could take this week to live more in alignment with one of them?
Want help rediscovering ways to live and work in a way that feels easier and more authentic?
This is exactly the kind of deep reconnection that happens in coaching.
When you start living by your values — your confidence returns. Not as arrogance, or perfectionism, or people-pleasing.
But as quiet confidence.
From there, anything is possible! And it’s not too late to make a change.
